Desk Arrangement Essentials

Creating a workspace that supports natural, comfortable positioning

Monitor Placement

Position your monitor at arm's length distance. The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level. This supports a more neutral neck position.

Keyboard Position

Keep your keyboard at a height where your elbows bend at about 90 degrees. Your wrists should stay in a neutral position, not angled up or down.

Mouse Placement

Place your mouse close to your keyboard at the same level. Avoid reaching or stretching to use it. Consider using a mouse pad with wrist support.

Chair Adjustment Guide

Getting the most support from your office chair

Seat Height

Adjust your chair so your feet rest flat on the floor and your thighs are parallel to the ground. If your desk is too high, consider using a footrest to maintain proper positioning.

Seat Depth

There should be about 2-3 fingers of space between the front edge of your seat and the back of your knees. This prevents pressure on your thighs and allows proper circulation.

Lumbar Support

Adjust the lumbar support to fit the natural curve of your lower back. If your chair lacks built-in support, a small cushion or rolled towel can provide additional comfort.

Armrest Height

Set armrests so your shoulders stay relaxed while your elbows rest comfortably at about 90 degrees. Armrests that are too high cause shoulder tension; too low provides no support.

Daily Ergonomic Habits

Small practices that support long-term comfort

Stay Hydrated

Keep water at your desk and drink regularly. This naturally encourages you to take breaks and move around throughout the day.

Lighting Balance

Position your screen to avoid glare from windows or overhead lights. Proper lighting can reduce eye strain and support good posture without squinting or leaning.

Clear Desk Space

Keep frequently used items within easy reach. Stretching and twisting to grab things throughout the day can add up over time.

Position Variety

No single position is ideal for long periods. If possible, alternate between sitting and standing, or simply shift your position periodically.

Equipment Considerations

Optional additions that may enhance your workspace

Monitor Stand

If your monitor sits too low, a stand or monitor arm can raise it to the proper height without taking up desk space.

Footrest

Helpful when your desk height cannot be adjusted. A footrest provides support if your feet do not reach the floor comfortably.

Document Holder

If you frequently reference papers while typing, a document holder positioned near your screen reduces neck turning and eye strain.
